46th and 56th Div Battlefield Tour

46th and 56th Division Battlefield Tour (Operation Raincoat): HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

46th and 56th Div Battlefield Tour: the Salerno landing

General Marck Clark believed that the invasion beaches in Salerno area would be lightly defended, for that reason he decided not to bomb the area to prepare the landing in order to maintain the element of surprise. And it was too late when the 3 Divisions that tryed to land on September 9, 1944 discovered that the Germans were waiting for them in force The two British division the 46th and 56th met fierce resistance in their northen area. To be successful in landing they must concentrate their forces in the north, and didn’t link up with the 36th Division in the south area. The distance between the British and the Americans was just 10 miles, but both of them needed reinforcement, and only the shelling of the naval batteries and the bravery of the men could help.
