46th and 56th Div Battlefield Tour

46th and 56th Division Battlefield Tour (Operation Raincoat): HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

46th and 56th Div Battlefield Tour: the Salerno landing

General Mark Clark believed that the invasion beaches in the Salerno area would be lightly defended. For that reason, he decided not to bomb the area in advance, hoping to maintain the element of surprise. However, when the three Allied divisions attempted to land on September 9, 1943, it was already too late — the Germans were waiting for them in force. The two British divisions, the 46th and 56th, met fierce resistance in the northern sector. To successfully land, they had to concentrate their efforts in the north, but were unable to link up with the 36th American Division in the southern area. The distance between the British and American forces was only about 10 miles, but both groups urgently needed reinforcements. In the end, it was the heavy shelling from naval batteries — and the determination and bravery of the soldiers — that kept the landing from becoming a disaster.
