WWII Museum in Prata Sannita: WHAT TO EXPECT
There are small museums around the world that rival even the largest institutions—not by size, but through the powerful local stories and personal experiences they preserve. One such meaningful gem is the museum in Prata Sannita. If you’re expecting a modern building, think again. This museum is beautifully housed in the Castle of Prata, an ancient private fortress perched atop the old medieval village known as Prata Vecchia.

Battlefield and WWII visit in Prata Sannita
The village was likely founded by the Lombards over 1,000 years ago, following the Saracen raids. Although none of the original buildings remain today, visitors can still explore the castle, which dates back to the 14th century. Over the centuries, this once defensive fortress transformed into a cozy residence for several prominent families, including the Sanframondo and Pandone. For the past 150 years, it has been home to the Scuncio family.

The castle’s owners, Vittorio Scuncio and his mother Donna Lucia, warmly welcome visitors and are eager to share their small but meaningful collection of WWI and WWII memorabilia and photographs. Vittorio began collecting these relics when he was a young boy, motivated by a desire to preserve them from destruction.

The section dedicated to the Second World War is arranged in a large, ancient room within the castle and showcases memorabilia from the various armies that fought in this region during 1943-1944. Vittorio’s focus is on the battles that took place between Salerno and Rome, with special attention to the Medio Volturno area. The exhibition features not only relics, helmets, and weapons but also powerful photographs that help visitors better understand key moments such as the Allied landing at Salerno, the battles along the defensive lines of Caiazzo and Capriati al Volturno, the fighting in Prata, and ultimately the conquest and breakthrough of the Winter Line.

But it’s easy to imagine that a WWII enthusiast like Vittorio couldn’t resist collecting memorabilia related to the Gustav Line and the Four Battles of Montecassino as well. His collection on display also includes relics from Cassino and Anzio-Nettuno. Vittorio takes pride in having not only artifacts found in Prata Sannita but also items that were repurposed for farm use—for example, a helmet that was transformed into a watering trough for cows.

He also has some Canadian tents left behind by the Canadian Army. While the Allies were preparing the assault on the Gustav Line, the Canadians stayed in Prata. Because of the strong winter winds, they sought shelter in the local cemetery and the castle. When they moved on, the tents were left behind and stored in the castle’s cellars.

WWI Museum in Prata Sannita: not only war but also little memories of local civilians
In recent years, Vittorio has also begun collecting the personal memories of Prata’s inhabitants—those who lived through the war and can add their own stories to the broader history. If you visit Donna Lucia’s collection (Vittorio’s mother), you will discover just how hard life was for the people of Prata Sannita during the war years.
