Battle for Rome Battlefield Tour: HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
On May 18th, after three months of attempts to break through the Gustav Line, the town of Cassino and the monastery hill were finally captured by the Allies. The breakthrough was led by General Mark Clark’s 5th Army, with vital support from General Oliver Leese’s 8th Army. Reaching the Abbey was anything but easy. The Allies, with the help of Polish, New Zealand, Indian, and French colonial troops, had to fight fiercely to cross the Rapido River and navigate through barbed wire and minefields. Many soldiers lost their lives in the assault. Although the hills surrounding the Abbey were eventually taken, the war was far from over.

The French troops advanced through the Aurunci Mountains, the Canadians moved through the center of the Liri Valley, the Indians pushed along Highway 6, and the Poles fought on the hills of Monte Cairo. They continued to battle German forces, who were retreating to positions further north. The Allies went on to capture Aquino, Pontecorvo, and Roccasecca, then Ceprano, and finally Frosinone. After five months of intense fighting, the Allies were able to reach Rome and entered the city on June 4th.
