Battle for Rome Battlefield Tour

Battle for Rome Battlefield Tour: HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

On the 18th May after 3 months of attempts to break the Gustav Line, at the end the 5th Army of General Mark Clark with the help of the troops of General Oliver Leese of the 8th Army, the monastery hill and the town of Cassino were taken. It was not so easy to join the Abbey. The Allies this time with the help of the Poles, the New Zealanders, the Indians, and the French colonials, had to fight very hard to cross the Rapido River and to run between barbed wires and mines. So many  of them were killed, but when the hills around the Abbey were taken, the war was not over.

The Allied conquered Aquino, Pontecorvo, Roccasecca, Then Ceprano and at the end Frosinone. After 5 months of fighting, the Allied could join Rome and entered the City on 4 June
