45th Division Battlefield tour: HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

By the landing at Salerno the Allied had understood that the Germans had the power of the highground. It was not easy to proceed on the way to Rome, so he asked for help. General Troy Middleton , leading the Thunderbird Division, asked fot food and munitions ready to resist to the German attacks. On September 14, 1943 the German attacks started, but the Germans didn’t push so much further and the Allied resisted. On September the 16th the Americans and the British linked up. On 7 December 1943 the 45th Division had his headquarter in Venafro area, and was asked to size a mountain called 640

Only 15 days later , on January 10, 1944 the 45th Division was relieved of its position on the Winterline by French troops called Goums, coming from Morocco with the French troops. They retreat to a rest camp near Naples to relax for two weeks, and then they were ask to land again at Anzio

The “45th Division Battlefield tour“ (about 3 hours) includes:

1) pickup from your arrival at the railway station in Cassino every day at 10.00am or 02.00pm (Main Square, near the Green Kiosk)

2) about 3h30 guided tour of the 45th Division most meaningful sites of Cassino:

place where the Christmas nass was celebrated in Venafro area

where the soldiers had their Thanksgiving dinner on 1943

3) return to the railway station in Cassino at 01.30pm or 05.30pm
