The 82nd Airborne Division was originally scheduled to take part in the Normandy invasion in early June 1944, but Lieutenant General Mark Clark was reluctant to release the division from the Italian front. During the final weeks of fighting on the Winter Line in Italy, the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment — reinforced with the 376th and 456th Parachute Field Artillery Battalions to form the 504th Parachute Regimental Combat Team — engaged in intense combat in the rugged terrain of Mount Sammucro and surrounding areas.
