Winter Line WWII tours: HISTORIAL BACKGROUND
The reorganization of the Fifth Army at the end of November 1943 was straightforward. Mark Clark decided that the 3rd and 36th Infantry Divisions would now be under the command of Major General Geoffrey Keyes of II Corps. The First Special Service Force (FSSF), led by Colonel Robert T. Frederick, became part of the 36th Infantry Division on November 23rd, 1943. Meanwhile, VI Corps included the 34th and 45th Divisions at that time.

The Germans had established their first defensive line in this area, specifically at Mignano Montelungo, which was part of the so-called Winter Line. After the first bloody battle, the 3rd Division was relieved by the 36th Infantry Division, and a new operation was about to begin. This operation was named “Raincoat,” due to the particularly heavy rain. It started at 04:20 on December 2nd with an Allied artillery barrage targeting Camino Mass and Church Hillâthe Allied name for the top of Camino Mass.
