Winter Line WWII tours: HISTORIAL BACKGROUND

The reorganization of the Fight Army at the end of November 1943 was very simple. Mark Clark decide that the 3rd and the 36th Infantry Divisione were now under the command of Maj. General.Geoffrey Keyes of the II Corps and the FSSF (First Service Special Force) led by Col. Robert T. Frederick was on 23rd November 1943 parte of the 36th Infantry Division. Instead the VI Corps included at that time the 34th and the 45th Divisions.

The Germans had located the first of their there defensive line in this area, exactly at Mignano Montelungo ad being parte of the so called Winter Line. After the First Bloody Battle the 3rd Division was relieved by the 36th Infantry Division and a new operation was going to begin. The name of the new Oeration was Raincoat, due to the particularly heavy rain. It started at 04.20 on Decembre 2 with AN Allievi Artillery barrage on Camino Mass and on Church Hill, the Allies name of Camino Mass top.
